It was on July 22, 1841, in Bone Gap, Illinois, a 17 year old granddaughter of an American Revolutionary War patriot, Temperance (as she was known) Lough, married a young man who was newly arrived from England, Richard Hocking, Jr.
Together Temperance and Richard raised eleven children there in Bone Gap including Mary, Lovina, and their fifth son, Charles Marcellus Hocking, born on May 28, 1856. They were married for 30 years when Richard died at the age of 55 in 1871. Temperance lived on to be 74 in 1898 seeing many grandchildren added to her family tree.
