Kate Jane Adams Long Baxter

A Broken Family

On July 17, 1889, there was born to Bryant Baskin and Nannie Walters Adams a daughter which they named Katie Jane, after her and his mother respectively. In Pine, Missouri, her mother died in March of 1898.

Bryant Baskin Adams died in March two years later of pneumonia leaving five children, ranging in age from thirteen to four years, without parents. All of the children expect Katie Jane were taken to be raised by the brother of their father, Jess Adams. But he ws not kind to the children. So the two girls were taken to be raised by two different families. The two boys soon ran away and were taken in by some friendly people in Success, Arkansas.

Nine year old Katie Jane was taken by Nathan Price and his wife, friends of Katie's parents, who lived firve miles west of Doniphan, Missouri. They provided her with a primary education at the Price community school just an eighth of a mile from their house. Each Sunday the family attended worship services held in the same building used for school during the week.

While attending school there, each day at noon Katie Jane would come home for lunch and then wash the family dishes before returning to school. At school Katie Jane Adams would play soft ball with the other girls. Her closest friend was Berdie Patterson (who later married the grandson of Nathan Price).

Every Saturday was a special day when the whole Price family and Katie would climb into their fancy horse drawn buggy and ride into the county seat of Riply County, Doniphan, Missouri. There they would sell the eggs and butter they had gathered and made during that week.
