After a few years of working on her own at the hotel in Rector, Arkansas, Katie Adams left there to visit her brother, Charley Adams, who was living and working in Success, Arkansas. While there she obtained a job working as a house servant for a well-to-do merchant family.
The Success baseball team, for whom her brother was the catcher, held an ice cream supper (probably in the summer of 1912) to raise money and Katie was one of those waiting on tables. A tall, slim, and handsome young man was there that night and he asked her to allow him to walk her home that night. She accepted his invitation and it began the courtship of Katie Adams and John Baxter.
They attended many baseball games together that summer. Picnics and the Methodist church were, also, frequented together. She found it to be lots of fun to spend as much time as she could with him. On one occasion John arrived with an apple which he claimed was the finest one of an entire bushel which he had bought and had chosen that one just for her. As he continued to talk he ate the whole apple himself. She found the incongruity of his words and his actions to be most amusing!
