R.V. Baxter

The Naming of R. V. Baxter

In the days before the birth of R.V. Baxter a neighboring farmer had promised his mother, Kate Baxter, that if the child was a boy and they would name the baby as he desired, that he (the neighbor) would buy the young boy his first pair of overalls. And, since his poor parents were desirous of being spared this expense, they agreed to do so.

Thus the new baby was named "R. V." - just the initials, nothing else.

As the young baby boy grew up and the time for his first pair of overalls came and went ... the neighbor never brought the overalls nor offered to pay their price.

Thus the bargain was only kept by the parents in the naming of their child, but never kept by the man who provided the name to R. V. Baxter.

In later years R.V. sometimes had difficulty convincing authorities who demanded that he supply them with his full name, not just his initials. So he sometimes told them that his full name was "Roosevelt Victor" Baxter.
