Reva Edwards

High Waters

Reva's cousin, Carney Baxter, recalls that it was shortly before he shipped out to join the Army at the beginning of WWII when her funeral was held.

There had been some recent heavy rain in the area and in the Missouri Ozark foothills just to the north of there which caused an "overflow" — a flood of the surrounding low farmland. Many of the roads were covered with water including the road running north from Success, Arkansas, to the Hitt Cemetery.

The overflow was so deep that the hearse carrying Reva's body could not get through the water covered roadway without flooding its engine. So Carney hitched up his father's truck (which had a much higher clearance) and pulled the hearse along the flooded roadway so that the burial could take place.
