The Passing of Ralph Attebery

Ralph Edward Atteberry, 83, of Naylor, Missouri, passed away December 24, 2012 in the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Uncle Ralph was one of the farmers that provide the foundation of food for all of us. Being a farmer goes way back along both sides of his ancestral linage. His father was one of the first farmers in southeast Missouri from the time he moved there just over 100 years ago, purchased, and began clearing farm land in the Buncomb area. Likewise his grandfather Ezekiel Attebery was a farmer originally in southeastern Illinois and from about 1910 just across the state line in Clay County, Arkansas, as was Uncle Ralphs maternal grandfather, Charles Marcelous Hocking who also farmed first in southeastern Illinois and then in Clay County, both of whom are now buried in the Cemetery in nearby Corning, Arkansas. The line of Attebery farmers can be traced back through Charles, John, and Richard to William J. Atterberry during the period before there was a United States of America with a 50 acre farm in the Virginia colony about 280 years ago.

The Passing of Betty Baxter

My Aunt Betty Walls Baxter went to her Heavenly reward last week. She was a gracious lady who was a key member of the gospel singing Baxter Family - made up of her, my uncle and their children - who sang all across the mid-western states in the 1960s and 1970s.

Sonjia Pearson in NovoCure Trial

Some months ago now Sonjias son, Don Jerry, came across a promising new glioblastoma brain cancer treatment called NovoCure. It is now in Phase III clinical trials at several medical centers around the world. Since this first came to their attention Sonjia and her family has researched this and other clinical trials looking for a better long term result beyond that which standard FDA and AMA approved treatments may offer. This week Sonjia and Dana travelled to the Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, to see if Sonjia could be accepted into the NovoCure glioblastoma clinical trial currently in progress. Sonjia spent two days there being interviewed, tested, and given another MRI. In the coming weeks and months Sonjia will wear the device almost continously day and night. Once each month Sonjia will return to Dallas for further evaluation. The NovoCure person will come to visit Sonjia in her home once midway between each of those monthly trips to Dallas. Twice a week Sonjias head will be re-shaved and the four electrodes replaced on her scalp. And every other month another MRI will be given to better assess the treatment results. All the while Sonjia will still follow the usual chemo regimen of daily for one week out of every four weeks.
